Bass Fishing in Crane Prairie Reservoir Bend Oregon

Bend Oregon is better known for its trout fishing, but also supports some lakes that have good populations of largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. The bodies of water within an hour drive from Bend to be held under Crane Prairie Reservoir, wickiup Reservoir, Davis Lake, Prineville Reservoir, Lake Reservoir barn and Billy Chinook (Round Dam).

Crane Prairie Reservoir is better known for its large rainbow and brook trout. However, it is full of stumps, standing and fallen trees. It is a Largemouth Bass heaven. It is a relatively shallow body of water with reeds and water lilies and a large amount of forest cover. The deepest part near the dam is 16 to 20 feet deep depending on the amount of water in the tank at any given time.

The deposit is located in the Cascade Mountains southwest of Bend. It is surrounded by pine trees and supports a healthy wildlife population. You can always count innumerable see ospreys, bald eagles and a number of waterfowl. Osprey and great blue heron nest both Crane Prairie.

Crane Prairie is not a lake throughout the year and often freezes in winter. Since it is a lake trout from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife closed to fishing in late October and opens back up on the third Saturday of April. There are years that is partially covered with ice on opening day.

The belief is that under Largemouth no, do not bite until June or July, when the water warms. "However, some of the best fishing on Crane is low in May. The author has many more trapped under five pounds in late April and May. The place to fish is the northern part of the reservoir surface where water temperature can be in the low to fifty years, from 2 to 6 feet water.

Early morning in April and May are not the time to fish for bass. Early afternoon is the best time to start. The water in Crane is very clear on this season and is difficult to get a bite if the sun rises and the wind is calm. The silt and mud bottom with plentiful amounts of wood cover absorb heat in these cold spring days.

If it is quiet and sunny that are better to put your rod down, the traction motor and starting high to find the fish. Many times will be over fallen logs sunning.
Root balls are also numerous trees down that load of fish. You not see any small fish at this time of year. It will be strictly pre-spawning females.

Once you start seeing fish slow down and start to look more closely. You will find several fish in the same area and do not want to scare them too much. Once you have found a few areas that contain fish be sure and mark them so you can return when the wind picks up and puts a little chop on the water.

It is not necessary to mark all fish. Only monitor the general area where you saw concentrations of fish. Back to the fields and fish set records and root balls. Templates Black weedless with a trailer or 6 inches black worms are the ticket this time of year. Trailer favorite author template is 5 inch black with blue double tail grub Flake.

Crane is Great Plains under the rules of Oregon. The largest low-captured by the author was 6.5 pounds. He has seen Largemouth caught and released in excess of 8 pounds in some local tournaments under. These are not your normal run and gun tournaments under However, because there is a 10 mph speed limit Crane Prairie Reservoir.

In the decade 1990 under the average for the spring was in the range of 3 to 5 pounds. Now the average is 2 to 4 pounds with about 5 pounds thrown in Crane Prairie Largemouth usually generates around the moon filled in late June. Spawn and post spawn is usually when the fish "start to bite" for the general public and anyone can take several small males that bite aggressively.

After spawning of a large fall in low back to deeper water around the channels and become more difficult to catch. Spinner baits and crank baits come into play at this time of year. The water also begins to take a little color and not so clear. Aquatic plants and moss also start to grow even more difficult templates for fish and worms.

Fall and late fall are difficult times for the capture fish as water is low by the use of irrigation and begins to clear again. Spring is definitely the best time to take large Mouth Bass on Crane Prairie Reservoir.
