What are the good trout flies in Ohio in late September to October?
Im planning on heading to the river in downtown crazy Ohio west of brown trout and rainbow trout fishing. Ive never caught a trout on a fly, and have practiced my technique only bluegill, i dont know much about trout flies. Need to know what flies to more natural match local hatches, and what flies are GOT-TO-HAVE. BTW, is a small river / stream, water tends to be quite cold. THANKS!
Never fish the river crazy, but since nobody else seems to stop by, I can make some recommendations general. I imagine the dry fly action in your area in the next two months will consist mostly of caddisflies and several ephemeral and mosquitoes. Hatches Autumn may be abundant and a blast to fish. The best thing would pray for a caddisfly hatch that can be fished in the evening with an Elk Hair Caddis. Match the color and size and clinging to its pole. The Elk Hair Caddis is robust, easy to see and easy to present. Because you're usually fishing with flies size 12-16, are easy to install and to stay. You can fish for adulthood, emergers, and the rise of the larvae with various patterns. So if you see an insect that looks like this: http://www.cirrusimage.com/images/Trichoptera_caddisfly_1.jpg fish with a fly that looks like this: http://images2.orvis.com/orvis_assets/prodimg/0378NW.jpg or this: http://images3.orvis.com/orvis_assets/prodimg/02B3NW.jpg or this: http : / / www.orvis.com/orvis_assets/corpimg/0420_HaresEar.jpg Almost as good would be a mosquito or mayfly hatch on a cloudy or rainy days that were fished Blue Wing Olives, or you can fly like a Parachute Adams patterns. This can occur in the early morning, but it is more likely to occur in the afternoon and evening. If there is a hatch, try one of the CDC Emerge with a strike indicator. Therefore, if you see a fly that looks like this: http://www.ngatu692.com/Hatch_Chart/Pics/Pic_BWO.jpg fish with a fly that looks like this: http://images3.orvis.com/orvis_assets/prodimg/ 0338NW.jpg or this: or this http://images3.orvis.com/orvis_assets/prodimg/0356NW.jpg: http://images2.orvis.com/orvis_assets/prodimg/801ENW.jpg You may see very small flies, as small black or brown mosquito, hatching eggs and a swarm in the water. These can be imitated with one of my favorite flies, Mosquito Griffith: Griffith http://images3.orvis.com/orvis_assets/prodimg/0922NW.jpg mosquitoes Very small (18 to 22) are more difficult to fish. They are harder to see and harder to fish with bait, but you can catch some nice big fish in these flies. Not hatch? Try a hopper on the surface or subsurface Wooly Bugger, either with a small nymph on a dropper – Hare's Ear small, Prince Nymph, Zebra Brassie or nymphs. To focus on the exact patterns and variations using, for fish, and when to fish, visit a flight and talk to people who work there. The hatches will depend on weather, water temperature and flow. Must-have withered Blue Wing Olive in sizes 16 to 20. Pale Morning Dun in sizes 16 to 20. Elk Hair Caddis in sizes 12 to 16 (a couple different shades would be good). Several local favorite Mayfly or mosquito patterns in sizes 16 — 22. Parachute Adams in sizes 12 to 18. Royal Wulff in sizes 12 to 16. Griffith's Gnat in sizes 18 to 22. Must-have wet: Hare's Ear Nymph in sizes from 14 to 18. Pheasant Tail in sizes 14 to 18. Brassie in sizes 16 to 20. Woolly Bugger in sizes 10 to 14 (a couple of different colors would be nice). Prince Nymph in sizes 14 to 18. Other local favorite nymphs in various patterns. Your mileage may vary! Talk to the guys at the fly shop, or someone you neighbornood. As I said, never I have fished in Ohio, and these are general assumptions based on approaches that work most anywhere.
