Fly fishing for crappie – Is it possible to catch Crappie Fly Fishing?
If you have never fished the fish with a fly rod, then you really have lost something. In my opinion, crappies and other panfish, are the ideal rod quarry for the following reasons;
There are plenty of them.
They are almost everywhere.
They are delicious!
They are incredibly willing to break your flight (most of the time) and the battle.
Unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii is very likely that you live within an hour or two of a body of water that has fish in it. Types of fish are seasonal migratory predators. I will not enter into their habits of season here because this is an issue in itself. Suffice it to say it helps to know your quarry.
It's easy for most of the year. If you find em .. you catch em. The notable exception is the summer when crappies get Moody, morose and suspension in open water. Often receives locking of the jaw at this time and even refuse a minnow hanging live under their noses!

All you need is a single action reel, and need not be expensive. Next, you need a WF2F, or WF3F, or ST fly line, or perhaps a DT5S for summer. Top it off with the leader of 5 conical (type of fish are not line shy, so that a leader long is not necessary) and a 4X and 5X tippet, and its almost ready to go.

Some accessories are nice to have. If the fish from a boat, and plan type of fish caught throughout the year, a good depth finder is a necessity. You want a landing net, as they have very tender crappies mouth and can tear easily. For the same reason, a basket floating fish or living well is good to have, because crappie can easily boot from a correspondent.
You will need a flashlight for night fishing. If you not have a boat, you may want to see the different models of Belly Boats or Float Tubes. They are great for catching fish in calm water.
