Trivia: The Physics of fishing?
Question of the week is inspired by a series of questions of physics that currently appear on buses city, Amherst, Massachusetts … Say you are fishing in a boat on a lake and catch a boat anchor and falling overboard in Lake: The water level of Lake of origin (as the anchor is now taking up space in the lake)? Or is that the fall of water level (because the boat is floating higher in the water)? Or is it the water level remains the same (because these two things cancel each other)? Or is it impossible to determine what level of water will do no more? (As there are only four possible answers, their first response is final. And no, I have to show your work.)
Sharon felt the water level drops. The anchor on the boat displaces an amount of water equal to the mass of the anchor. The anchor in the water displaces an amount of water equal to the volume of the anchor. The water is less dense than the anchor, so the first quantity is definitely more than the second amount, and the water level drops. ♣
