Angkor Wat – Reflections on the Resplendence

Angkor Wat

Travel can be used where the vaunted treasure heritage tour 'treasure trove' test to house a Buddha threadbare and some burned joss sticks. Similarly, even the pyramids of Giza may seem exaggerated when viewed in context, pressed against the dirt of Cairo. Disappointment abounds.

Few tourists, however, report feeling disappointed or tired when they witness Angkor Wat: The temple complex of Angkor in Cambodia built at the periphery of modern Vietnam for King Suryavarman II in the Century 12 since the state temple and capital city. Angkor Wat (Temple Mount) is one of the greatest religious monuments ever built and is a magnet for superlatives. Lonely Planet calls it "one of the most inspired and spectacular monuments ever conceived by the human mind '.

The scale the monument makes it difficult to understand: it has five towers that appeared on the flag of Cambodia, galleries, chambers and courtyards at different levels, connected by stairs. The whole world stands with cosmic central tower that symbolizes Mount Meru: the mythic, the sacred mountain in the heart of the universe.

Nothing about the structure of the world's largest temple is mundane, even the moat. Symbolic of the world's oceans, the moat, which makes the rings of the Tower of London built around the same time, resembling a routine. No army ever made in its entirety open. Monumentality contained the temple and the precise proportions amply justify his status as one of the seven wonders of the world. There are no words that adequately describe the task of the sublime power, unity and style. Language fails, the reader has to do with their own eyes Angkor.

Choking in the jungle, Angkor Wat was met by the West in 1861. We thank the French botanist Henri Mouhot, who "discovered" Marvel architecture orchids, while hunting in the jungles of northwestern Cambodia. Like many who follow in their footsteps, Mouhot was surprised.

Here we relate Mouhot reactions ecstasy, a medieval monk and two most recent visitors, all which attempt to dig beyond superlatives and explain what the supreme masterpiece of Khmer architecture means to them.

Henri Mouhot, 19-century explorer One of these temples – a rival of Solomon, and erected by some ancient Michael – could have a place of honor next to our buildings beautiful. It's bigger than anything we have left for Greece or Rome, and presents a sad contrast with the state of barbarism in which the nation is now plunged. At Angkor, There are ruins of greatness so that, at first glance, one is filled with profound admiration, and can only wonder what has become of this powerful race, so civilized, so enlightened, the authors of these gigantic works?

The temple is extraordinary construction it is not possible to describe with a pencil, mostly because it's like no other building in the world. It has towers and decoration and all the refinements which the human genius can conceive.

Antonio da Magdalena, Portuguese monk who visited in 1586

The Michael Di Giovine, author: "Heritage, Landscape: UNESCO, Heritage and Tourism.

First, he became enamored of Angkor in 2002 when I headed group travel Cambodia and Vietnam. Cambodia was really reach the mass market of cultural tourism, and many of my passengers just do not know what to expect.

They came for many different reasons and had different expectations. However, like me, everyone was impressed by the immensity of the place itself, the beauty and the exquisite art of the monuments, and the unique fusion of Hindu and Buddhist Khmer performances.

I remember being particularly impressed by the sunrise one of Angkor Wat, where I felt like a spectator to the fusion of man and nature. Unlike the sunsets that are received rowdily in the temple of Angkor Phnom Bakheng mountain, this was a solemn and transcendent, imbuing me with a strong sense of the enormity of life and his supreme creation. At 4 am, remember, the fog was heavy and ragged steam rising moat of Angkor was crossing the road was long, almost imperceptible. Despite the crush of people, most were silent, and I felt like if I were the only person to enter the vast temple complex.

I sat in the courtyard, just inside the outer wall, looking like others in the vacuum thickness before me, wondering where exactly the developers of pine-cone towers seems. When daylight finally launched its first rays of color in the sky, Angkor emerged – in the shape of a nearly two-dimensional representation of the human achievement – and then it gradually became clearer, complete. When the world woke up in a soft blue wash of gray, so did my understanding of the strength and diversity of humankind and the variety of symbols, their motivations and achievements.

Martin Gray, author: Sacred Sites of my visit to Angkor, which lasted over a week, I had determined to arrive before the hour of sunrise. Sitting in the west of the great temple, with its wide moat of water, I saw the sky changes from black to purple and pink. The water reflects the heaven and that which comes from the darkness of the night was the most sublime temple of all Southeast Asia.

Built by the kings of the Khmer civilization between 802 and 1220 CE, the temple complex of Angkor is only surpassed in size by the Bagan in Burma. There are over 100 stone temples of Angkor, including Angkor Wat is the most large, and together represent one of the most astonishing architectural achievements of mankind.

For half a millennium of red occupation, the city Angkor became a pilgrimage destination of importance throughout Southeastern Asia. As such, a pilgrim who had also arrived. Wandering through Asia for several years I had explored the temples of Hinduism and Buddhism. There is a sense of holiness and power of these places that goes to the heart of every visitor. Pilgrims talk of miracles healing and mystical visions of spiritual ideas and improving personal creativity.

I experienced such wonderful and I was surprised by the magnificent beauty of the site. The temple of Angkor Wat is only one part of a larger whole, which includes the songs of sacred art as the Bayon, Ta Prohm and Bantai Serai. Take time to visit this ancient holy place, let it work its magic on your heart and mind. It is an experience you will never forget.
