Salmon farms in Chile use 5000 times more antibiotics than Norwegian salmon farms.
Norwegian fish farms use huge amounts of antibiotics, but in Chile using 5000 times more than in Norway. This is according to the WWF a dangerous trend, and is afraid of resistance to antibiotics and environmental consequences.
A new research report by Marine Harvest reports on the amount of antibiotics used in Chile. Marine Harvest is owned by a Norwegian investor named John Fredriksen.
The amount of antibiotics is 5000 times higher than in Norway.
Comments WWF that the number is alarming, as is used in Norway of 0.07 g antibiotics pr ton of salmon produced in Chile is used 560 grams of salmon pr ton produced.
Damage to salmon and the environment can be enormous, given the quantities we are talking about here says the WWF.
WWF has called for this type of information has long fish farms, as they have indicated that the large amount of antibiotics can lead to resistance and the damage and give side effects in salmon.
The spread to wild salmon can also be a problem when using antibiotics in fish farms as the food used in fish farm sink to the bottom of the sea and creates a time bomb environment.

Marine Harvest said in a statement admitting that it can be a problem with the use of antibiotics to fish, and is not considered that the optimal solution.
Chile has a very intensive agriculture and fish farms are very close to each other in a very restricted.
The authorities have had little or no control with the industry in Chile and this has led to many diseases among the fish there. The industry response has been to pour the antibiotics on farms as it did in Norway in the 1980s.
Today the fish farming industry in Chile has almost collapsed and it is not to say, when changes occur.
The industry complains that the challenge is that all parties in the industry to make changes at the same time as the farms are located near each OT other and affect each others company.
Last year, Marine Harvest began using the vaccine and reduce antibiotic use with 200 grams of fish pr ton.
WWF Marine Harvest admired for this initiative and openness to this issue and consider this would be a way for the Norwegian fish farm industry to take a lead role in a global problem of farmed fish.
